How to Choose a Patio

A patio is an outdoor space where people gather to enjoy food, drink and socializing. It can be constructed from a wide variety of materials, but the most common types are brick and concrete.

The most important consideration when designing a patio is how it will be used. For example, is it going to be a quiet place for reading and relaxation or a high-traffic area where family and friends will gather? Understanding this primary purpose will help guide color, material and other design decisions.

For example, if a client wants to create a relaxing retreat, we might suggest cool shades of blues and greens for the paving material and a lush planting palette to match. On the other hand, if the main goal is to accommodate large gatherings, we might advise warm reds and oranges for the paving material and a more vibrant plant palette.

Another aspect to consider when choosing a patio is the climate where it will be installed. Wet regions require a patio with proper drainage to prevent standing water, which can cause insect infestation and mold growth. It is also a good idea to avoid a patio that touches up against the house, as this space tends to become unusable when rain or snow falls.

Finally, it is important to remember that natural patio products will darken over time with weathering. This is an advantage of using a natural stone product over a porcelain paver, but it is important to understand that the original color will not be permanent.
